Environmental Stewardship Pays Bottom-Line Dividends |

A world leader in catalog and retail sales of hunting, fishing and outdoor gear, Cabela's completed a 1 million square foot energy-efficient lighting project in 2003. The company was able to measure a 36 percent increase in light while using 61 percent less energy. By doing so, Cabela's removed 4.05 million kWh per year of base load capacity. This energy savings is now available to provide power to approximately 500 homes in the Prairie du Chien area. "We tested six different light fixtures, and the Orion fixture gave the most bang for the buck, including a large positive environmental impact, - stated Jason Knapp, Cabela's catalog fulfillment manager, "With Cabela's being such an outdoor company, we are always looking to do projects that are environmentally sound.- Using the EPA formula to calculate environmental savings over the lifetime of the fixtures, carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas which is linked to global warming, carbon emissions will be reduced by 16,567 tons; sulfur dioxide, which is related to acid rain, will be reduced by 223 tons; nitrogen oxide, another greenhouse gas associated with acid rain and smog, will be reduced by 518 tons; and mercury will be reduced by 9 pounds. "Everyone here is delighted that our new lighting helps the environment,- said Jason Knapp. "We've had a very positive response from our employees coupled with great bottom-line results." With grocery wholesaler and retailer Fresh Brands® aiming to increase retail sales by 15 percent each year for the next several years, company officials knew they had to have a top-notch infrastructure. A major part of its growth strategy has been an extensive revamp of its Sheboygan distribution facility, including the addition of square footage with energy-efficient technologies. Fresh Brands completed a major base load energy reduction project in the 420,000 square foot distribution center. The project is saving over 843,868 kilowatt-hours annually. "Fresh Brands is very pleased with the results - with the company benefiting from a return on investment in less than 18 months," commented Dick Wurtz, Manager of Refrigeration Services for Fresh Brands. "When we were doing our tests, the employees were awestruck with the added amount of lighting. Ultimately, I have to believe that we have improved our workplace environment for our employees, which will lead to improved employee productivity, along with cost reductions."
